Our story starts in a squad car, not a boardroom. For 32 years, our founder has worn the badge, answered the radio, and stood beside families when the knock on the door changed everything. Funeral details, memorial teams, late night calls with officers barely holding on, these experiences shaped a simple conviction, we owe our own better support, and we must build a place where they can finally exhale.
The seed of Safe Haven Ranch was planted in an equine therapy arena. Watching hardened officers and veterans drop their guard as a horse mirrored their fear and grief was a turning point. That day made something clear, our community needed a quiet, rural refuge that used both proven counseling and the honest, nonverbal feedback of horses. A ranch could hold the weight of trauma without judgment and gently invite people back to themselves.
Since December 2019, we have moved step by step, turning a late night idea into a formal mission. In November 2024, Safe Haven Ranch became a registered 501(c)(3), recognized by the IRS and the State of Illinois. A board with law enforcement, Marine Corps, education, finance, and community service experience now guides our work. The vision is ready, the structure is built, and with partners and donors, land and programs will follow.
